NarrativeJohn Ludwig was drafted into the US Army from Cloquet,MN in September 1943 and completed basic training in Camp Wolters, TX. He sailed to England and from there was assigned to the 41st Armd Inf. Reg. of the 2nd Armored Division. He landed in France on June 9th with his unit, 3 days after D-Day. He was involved in Operation Cobra, the breakout from St. Lo France on July 25 1944. On July 28th he volunteered to rescue a wounded buddy and was subsequently hit by German machine gun fire and was gravely wounded. He died the next day in a field hospital. For his actions he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was buried in the American Military cemetery at LaCambe, France and was brought back home in April 1948 and buried in Oneota Cemetery in Duluth, MN. |
