NarrativeI shipped out to Korea from California on the Aiken Victory. It was a terrible 18-day voyage of stormy weather. I arrived April 1, 1951. I left Korea May 13, 1952, serving 13 months and 13 days in the Korean Conflict. I was part of a 5-member advance ration team, providing rations to the front lines. We were about 3 miles behind the front line, always moving with the action--forward, backward, sideways. We were never in the know on our exact geographic location. I learned to go to sleep under mortar fire, which was primarily at night. When we received fresh food, it was a real treat! A shower was a helmet full of water. |
