NarrativeIn 1863, an Indian uprising took Eliza, wife of Thomas B. Thompson, and all their children back to Scott County, IA. They left by boat on the Minnesota River which is located just a couple of miles south of the land they owned, then went east to the Mississippi River, and then went directly south to Scott County, IA, where their family lived. Thomas Bennett stayed and joined local volunteers who fought the Indians. On July 30, 1863, Thomas Bennett Thompson was commissioned a Captain in the 37th Regiment of the Minnesota Militia by Henry A. Swift, then governor and commander-in-chief of the military forces of the State of Minnesota. |
