Narrative

Samuel D. Peters, the son of John F. and Anna (Thiessen) Hock Peters was born on September 25, 1925 at Okeene, OK. He moved with his family to Mountain Lake, MN, where he graduated from the Mountain Lake High School. Sam was baptized upon confession of his faith and received as a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church (now Community Bible Church) in Mountain Lake. In 1944 & 1945 Sam served his country in the United States Army as a T-4 Sargeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. On August 30, 1946 Sam was united in marriage to Florence J. Heppner at the Mennonite Brethren Church. They made their home in Mountain Lake where he farmed, worked at Balzer Manufacturing and eventually became a part-owner of Balzer. He designed and constructed doll houses; was a wrought iron artisan, community co-contributor of Christmas in the Park and the Veterans Memorial; and served on many church and civic boards. Sam died at his Mountain Lake home on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the age of 83 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wesley Peters and John J. Peters; and two sisters, Luella Peters in infancy and Doris Fast. Sam is survived by his wife, Florence Peters of Mountain Lake; a daughter, Sherryl (Walter) Wolff of Mankato, MN; a son, DeWayne (Brenda) Peters of Hill City, SD; four grandchildren, Matthew (Kristin) Wolff and their son Ethan of Victoria, MN, Britta (Steven) Dihel and their children Brynn and Tate of Apple Valley, MN, Chad Peters of Mankato and Kelen (Adam) Sohre of St. Cloud, MN; a sister, Viola Littau of Beaver, OK; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
