C. Perry Schenk was ordered (Order # 11,865) to report the local Draft Board Office at 6:00 PM on 25 March 1946 located in the Masonic Temple, in Anoka, MN. He was then transported to Fort Snelling, Minnesota for swearing-in on 27 March 1946 and further transported by troop train to Fort Bliss, Texas. He successfully completed the “Special Fire Control Gun Course” at the Anti-Aircraft Artillery School from May 13, through September 1, 1946. In 1946, Schenk also completed the J333, Farm Corps Course through the United States Armed Forces Institute, Madison, WI.

During his short time on active duty, T/3 Schenk qualified with the M1 rifle, the 45 Cal. “Grease Gun”, the 30 Cal. Carbine and the 40 mm anti-aircraft guns. He was qualified as an Instrument Repairman, with duties to check the calibration by sighting on a fixed point of known distance to determine whether required tolerance could be obtained by adjusting and regulating various Vernier screws. He also repaired instruments by completely disassembling and replacing faulty parts, and re-tested to make sure the new parts are working on both the 90 mm and 120 mm anti-aircraft guns which required numerous range visits with live firing.

T/3 Schenk was honorably discharged on 3 April 1947 under the authority of AR 615-365, Paragraph 1, Demobilization, as a T/3 with a primary Military Occupational Skill (MOS) of 922 (Instrument Repairman) from Company B, 124th Armored Ordinance Maintenance Battalion at Camp Hood, Texas with a total of 1 year and 7 days active military service.

United States Army Reserve (June 1975 January 1985)

In the spring 1975, C. Perry Schenk was refused enlistment into the Minnesota Army National Guard because of his age (51). At that time, National Guard enlistees were not eligible to waive the age requirement for a Reserve Component Retirement, an option only allowed to be waived by the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR).

Schenk enlisted in the United States Army Reserve (USAR) on 12 June 1975 at the age of 51 by signing a Request for Enlistment Age Waiver which was approved by TAGO, USARPC, St. Louis, MO on 10 March 1975. He joined Company C, 1st Battalion, 409th Infantry Brigade located in Paynesville, MN with an MOS of 11C20 (Mortar Squad Leader), at the rank of Specialist Five. He re-enlisted for a two (2) year period on 28 April 1976, and again re-enlisted for a period of five (5) years on 13 Mar 1977. During his Reserve duty he qualified as a Sharpshooter on the M16 rifle and as a member of an 81mm mortar crew.

He was promoted to Sergeant (E-5) by Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 409th Infantry Brigade on 15 March 1975. His duties as Training NCO for Headquarters Company, included coordination of NBC Training for the entire battalion and supervision of the NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) section whenever in the field. Sergeant Schenk transferred from Company C to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1/409th Infantry, St. Cloud, MN on 1 February 1978. He was appointed the Chemical Staff NCO and the RR/EO (Race Relations/Equal Opportunity) NCO for HHC. SGT Schenk was promoted to Staff Sergeant (E-6) by HQ, 1st Battalion, 409th Infantry Brigade on 16 February 1979 with the Primary MOS of 54E30 and Secondary MOS of 11C30.

During his USAR enlistment he successfully completed the Chemical, Biological, Radiation (CBR) Course at the Fort Sill CBR School from 12 Sep – 23 Sep 1977, Fort Sill, OK; the R03 Infantry NCO Basic Correspondence Course from the U.S. Army Training Support Center, Fort Eustis, VA; Pre-mobilization Legal Counseling Course from the 205th Light Infantry Brigade, Fort Snelling, MN; the Summer Operations in Northern Areas, Junior Leaders Orientation Course (78-21) from 3 July through 21 July 1978 at the U.S. Northern Warfare Training Center, in Fort Greeley, AK; Air Transportability Planning Course from the U.S. Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, VA on 17 December 1980; the Minnesota National Guard Winter Operations Instructor School at Camp Ripley, MN on 2 through 8 January 1977; the Training Management Workshop, at Readiness Group, Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, MN on 27 Jun 1976.

Upon his final voluntary reassignment to the U.S. Army Reserve Control Group (Retired) on 1 October 1984 at the age of 60, Staff Sergeant was awarded The Meritorious Service Medal for the period of service 4 June 1974 to 5 September 1984 signed by Major General Evan L. Hultman, Commander of Headquarters, 88th United States Army Reserve Command with the following citation:

“By direction of the Secretary of the Army, the Meritorious Service Medal has been awarded to Staff Sergeant Carlyle Perry Schenk, for having faithfully, and with great dedication, served in

the First Battalion 409th Infantry from June 1974 through September 1984. He served as Training NCO in Company C, and when solicited, assumed the duties of Battalion NBC NCO. Sergeant Schenk immediately took charge of the here-to-for lackadaisical NBC Program and developed it into one of the finest in the entire 205th Infantry Brigade. This was accomplished only though putting in many hours of additional time and while performing the additional duty of Headquarters Company Training NCO. Sergeant Schenk is totally reliable in crisis situations and has the welfare of his fellow soldiers always foremost in his efforts. This Soldier’s Soldier is untiring in his efforts and always performed in the highest tradition of Military Service”.
