Narrative

"My best experiences in the Navy was the many different ships, going to numerous countries, meeting different people of other nationalities. From Hawaii to Japan, to Korea, Tsing Tao, China, Hong Kong, Guam, Enievetok & the Phillipines. Crossing the Equator to the Domain of Neptunus Rex on the 18th of May 1954. One experience was when we were on a recon mission off Guam. We took the ship between a small island & mainland at Yang Do. As would have it the lane was not deep enough. The rocky bottom tore off the sonar transducor and chipped 2 feet of of both screws and folded over 2 feet of the rudder. We hobbled back to Sasebo, Japan at about 5 knots. Another incident was in 1952: we were one of a number of ships on a secret mission that patrolled the Island of Eniwetoc during "Operation Ivy". That was the detonation of the Hydrygen Bomb test, from which we did pick up some radiation from the rain squall. Although the Navy denies this after confirming with them later. If not for the US Navy, the ships I was on, all the friendships I made, the different countries and states I visited, and the overall general experience of seeing some parts of the world, it would have been a sad situation to have stayed in Madison, MN all my life. All over the world I met cousins and friends from New Munich and Madison."

Rest in peace, Al! (6 Nov 1928 - 8 Apr 2016)
