NarrativeJohn was drafted on June 25, 1918 and attended boot camp at Camp Dodge, Iowa, due to the influenza at Camp Funston, Kansas and then assigned to the 353rd Infantry Regiment of Kansas. John was a Corporal when he left the US for Europe on board the troop transport ship, USS Leviathan, on September 8, 1918 being assigned Compartment F-29 and Bunk 92. He was assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 353rd Infantry Regiment. He arrived on the front line at Meuse-Argonne Offensive on October 10th and participated in action until he was wounded in his left shoulder and left jaw on November 2, 1918. The Division was near Tailly, France when John was injured. He was sent home immediately and was discharged on April 11, 1919 when his wounds had healed. |
