Narrative

Tony retired as an Independent Consultant on 30 March 2012 with 45 years experience in nonprofit management, customer service, information media & technology, grant writing, fund development, marketing, advertising, employee relations & training, strategic planning and nonprofit board management.

As Sergeant Major Anthony R. (Tony) Nathe, United States Army-Retired, is currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the National Association of the Uniformed Services (NAUS), after three terms as President of the Uniformed Services Disabled Retirees (USDR), and helped the organization merge with NAUS. He has also served on the USDR Board since 2003, as President, 2nd Vice President, and 1st Vice-President.

Since 1973, Tony has been involved in numerous professional military organizations including the Minnesota National Guard Enlisted Association (MNGEA), where he served as its first Executive Director; the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS), serving 4 years as Secretary, 4 years a Vice-President, and 2 years a President. Tony is the founding President of the Central Minnesota Chapter 115 of The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) serving for 4 years. He helped develop and served as the first State Coordinator and Founding Chair of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota National Guard Youth Camp. He wrote, organized, and marketed a citizen petition re-naming 8th Street North in St. Cloud, MN to Veterans Drive, releasing the petition on the Fourth of July 2002 and organizing the dedication ceremony on Veterans Day 2002.

In addition to military organizations, Tony has served as President of the Cold Spring Area Historical Society, Board Member of the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Board of the Senior Helping Hands of the CentraCare Foundation, Board Director of the Minnesota Association of Volunteer Administrators (MAVA), Board Member of the St. Peter’s Parish Finance Committee, and is a founding Director of the ROCORI Area Community Foundation.

Tony has received several awards including being installed in the Minnesota Court of Honor at Camp Ripley in 2010, the 2006 Leader of the Year Award from the Care Providers of Minnesota, the 2005 Community Service Award from The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), and holds twenty-three individual awards and decorations from his 27-year career in the United States Army, which included a 12-month tour in Vietnam, and Active Guard Reserve of the Minnesota Army National Guard, retiring from his military career as a Sergeant Major on September 30, 1994 with his last duty assignment as the State Recruiting and Retention Operations NCO for the Minnesota Army National Guard.

Tony has published over 200 professional journals and authored over 250 essays, articles and editorials primarily focused on educating the public of the plight of enlisted military retirees and veterans as an “under-represented” class of Americans. He is currently writing his autobiography and working on his first book of poems. Tony is a 1967 graduate of Cathedral High School and a Magna cum laude graduate of St. Cloud State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Information Media with a minor in Mass Communications. He lives in Sauk Rapids with his wife of 46 years, Roberta and together they have two children and seven grandchildren.
